Elmalı Antalya Heat Pump & Radiator Heating
Elmalı sits at roughly 1,050 metres above sea level, one of Antalya's coldest inland districts, with snowfall in winter, and has no natural gas network. Devka Doğalgaz installs Vaillant aroTHERM heat pumps sized for Elmalı's cold climate, along with radiator heating and boiler service.
No gas network. There is no gas network in this district. For heating we work with Vaillant heat pumps, radiator systems and servicing of existing boilers.

How Elmalı's climate changes the heating decision
Elmalı sits in a completely different climate zone from Antalya's coastal districts: at roughly 1,050 metres elevation, it is one of the coldest places in the province, with winter snowfall and frosty nights. That difference calls for much more careful sizing than a coastal district like Kaş or Gazipaşa. There is no natural gas network in Elmalı, so homes today typically heat with wood/coal stoves, LPG boilers or radiator boiler systems; more homes and businesses are switching to a Vaillant aroTHERM heat pump each year.
How a heat pump behaves in a cold climate
Air-source heat pumps extract heat energy from outdoor air and raise it to a usable temperature via a compressor. As outdoor temperature drops, the efficiency of this process - the coefficient of performance, or COP - falls too: a system running at -5°C uses more electricity to deliver the same heat than the same system at 10°C. We don't ignore this for Elmalı's regularly sub-zero winter days: we size the unit's capacity against the district's coldest conditions, and where needed we add an electric backup heater or a hybrid setup running alongside an existing boiler.
Why underfloor heating or oversized radiators matter
A heat pump's efficiency improves as the water temperature it produces drops. Underfloor heating or oversized low-temperature radiators deliver more heat per unit of electricity than narrow, tall, old-style radiators. We recommend underfloor heating for new builds; for homes with existing radiators, the aroTHERM plus's ability to reach 75°C flow temperature means a switch is often possible without repiping.
Electrical capacity and outdoor unit placement
Because a heat pump runs on electricity, we check during the site visit - especially in older buildings - whether the fuse capacity and wiring can handle the unit's draw. The outdoor unit is built to handle snow and frost, but placement matters: we avoid spots under roof snow-slide paths or wind-drift corners, mounting it high enough and with clear airflow instead.
Older buildings: insulation comes first
In villages outside Elmalı's centre, uninsulated stone and adobe construction is common. A heat pump - or any heating system - may not deliver comfortable results on its own in these buildings. During the site visit we assess insulation as well as heat loss, and where needed recommend simple insulation upgrades first. This affects both upfront cost and long-term electricity bills directly.
When a hybrid setup makes sense
For homes with an existing boiler, running it alongside a heat pump in a "hybrid" setup can sometimes be the better choice: the heat pump handles heating alone on milder days, while the boiler steps in to cover extra load on the coldest days. This approach lowers the upfront investment and removes the risk of the system falling short on the toughest winter days.
Why maintenance frequency differs here
Elmalı's dusty summers and its snowy, frosty winters mean the outdoor unit's filter and heat exchanger need checking more often than in coastal districts. We recommend two checks a year - one at the start of autumn, one in spring - more frequent than the standard boiler maintenance schedule elsewhere.
How the process works
For every Elmalı project we start with a phone consultation to clarify requirements, then carry out an on-site survey to calculate heat loss. After the visit we provide a written quote and installation schedule; once approved, we complete installation, commissioning and a walkthrough of the controls.

Frequently asked questions
Is a heat pump enough for an Elmalı winter?
With correct sizing, yes - but Elmalı's winter is far colder than Antalya's coastal districts, and that has to be built into the design. An air-source heat pump's efficiency (COP) drops as outdoor temperature falls, so we size Elmalı systems with a wider safety margin against the district's coldest days than we would on the coast, and where useful we add an electric backup element or a hybrid setup with an existing boiler.
Can snow damage the outdoor unit?
The outdoor unit is built for snow and frost, but snow sliding off a roof or wind-drifted snowbanks can block its air intake. We mount units away from roof overhangs and drift-prone corners, at a height clear of typical snow accumulation.
What should I check before switching an old stone or adobe house to a heat pump?
Elmalı has a lot of older, poorly insulated stone and adobe building stock. In these cases we start with a heat loss and insulation assessment - otherwise neither a heat pump nor any other heating system will perform well. We don't claim a heat pump suits every building; we assess honestly during the site visit.
I already have radiators - do I need to replace them all?
The Vaillant aroTHERM plus can produce flow temperatures up to 75°C, so it can run on your existing radiators. Best efficiency still comes from underfloor heating or oversized low-temperature radiators, but even in a cold district like Elmalı, switching over without a full radiator re-pipe is usually possible.
