How to Reset a Vaillant Boiler: Steps for Each ecoTEC Model

Knowing how to reset a Vaillant boiler is useful when the unit locks itself out after a fault: it's a simple procedure, but one with rules. This guide is for anyone in Antalya, Turkey whose Vaillant boiler has stopped with a fault code. Based on the official user manuals published by Vaillant Turkey, it explains how to reset the ecoTEC plus, ecoTEC pure, ecoTEC pro and ecoTEC intro, how many attempts are allowed, and when you should call an authorized technician instead of resetting.

What Does a Reset Do?

For safety, Vaillant boilers put themselves into a "fault state" after certain faults and won't run again on their own. The classic example is an ignition failure: according to the ecoTEC manuals, if the burner fails to light after several consecutive attempts, the unit locks out and shows F.28. The reset button lets the boiler try to ignite again once the cause has gone away, for example after a gas valve that was left closed has been opened. A reset is not a repair. It doesn't remove the cause of the fault; it only allows the boiler another attempt.

Check These Before Resetting

  1. Write down the code on the display. The code tells you whether a reset can help at all.
  2. Check the gas isolation valves. For ignition faults, the manuals ask you to confirm first that the gas isolation valve is open.
  3. Look at the water pressure. If pressure is low, the fix is a top-up, not a reset.
  4. Make sure there is no smell of gas. If there is, don't press any button (see the safety section below).

How to Reset a Vaillant Boiler: Steps by Model

Where the reset button is and how long to hold it varies by model. The information below comes from each model's current user manual published on Vaillant Turkey's website. If your boiler has an older control panel, follow your own manual.

ecoTEC plus

According to the current ecoTEC plus user manual, the on/off (standby) button on the control panel does two jobs: pressed for up to 3 seconds it switches standby on or off, and held for more than 3 seconds it acts as the reset button and restarts the unit. For fault F.028 (ignition failed), the manual says to check the gas isolation valve first, then hold the reset button for more than 3 seconds, with a maximum of 3 repeats.

ecoTEC pure

On the ecoTEC pure, the on/off button also serves as the reset button: a press shorter than 3 seconds switches the unit on or off, while a press longer than 3 seconds resets it. For F.28, the manual says to check the gas isolation valve and then hold the reset button for more than 3 seconds; if three reset attempts don't clear the fault, contact an authorized dealer.

ecoTEC pro

The ecoTEC pro has a separate reset button on its control panel. According to the troubleshooting table in its manual, after consecutive failed ignition attempts the unit goes into fault state with F.28; you then press the reset button for one second and the boiler starts a new ignition attempt. If the problem remains after three attempts, contact an authorized dealer.

ecoTEC intro

The ecoTEC intro user manual has a dedicated reset section: from the main screen, press the on/off button for more than 3 seconds to clear the fault, and "rE" appears on the display. The manual says to do this no more than five times; after five attempts "rE" flashes rapidly, and you need to press the button shown in the manual to stop the flashing and restart the unit. If the fault hasn't cleared by then, contact an authorized technician.

When a Reset Won't Help

A reset only works if the temporary cause of the lockout has gone. In these cases resetting won't solve the problem:

  • F.22 (water pressure too low): the boiler has stopped because there isn't enough water. The fix is to top up the system; we explain how in what should boiler pressure be.
  • Recurring F.28: if ignition keeps failing with the gas valve open, there may be a problem with the electrode, the gas valve or the flue. See our guide to the Vaillant F.28 error.
  • F.75 (pump / insufficient water): for this pump and water circuit fault, check pressure and air in the system first; see the Vaillant F.75 error.
  • Emergency messages: according to the ecoTEC plus manual, if emergency (N.xxx) messages appear on the display, contact an authorized technician.

Unplugging Is Not a Reset

Vaillant's user manuals always describe the reset button as the way to clear faults. Unplugging the boiler or switching the circuit breaker off and on again is not listed as a reset method, and it can make it harder to see the fault code. Using the button and the attempt limit given in the manual is the right approach.

What to Watch After a Reset

Watching what the boiler does after you press reset tells you whether the problem is solved and, if not, gives the technician the right information:

  • Has the display returned to normal? If the fault code disappears and the main screen comes back, the boiler is ready to run again.
  • Do heating and hot water work? Open a tap and feel the radiators to check.
  • When does the fault come back? Straight away on the first ignition attempt, or after the boiler has run for a while? This distinction matters for diagnosis.
  • Is it the same code? The same code returning points to a lasting cause, while different codes may indicate a separate problem.

When you call a technician, giving your boiler model, the code on the display, how many times you reset it and when the fault returned helps the team arrive with the right part.

Why Stick to the Attempt Limit?

The attempt limit is part of the boiler's safety system. With an ignition fault, every reset means gas is sent to the burner again. Resetting over and over without knowing the cause is a safety risk and can make the fault worse. When you reach the limit in the manual, noting the code and calling an authorized technician is both safer for you and quicker to diagnose.

Service After a Reset in Antalya

Boilers in Antalya often sit switched off through the long summer, so ignition and pressure lockouts are common on the first run of the season. Some of these are solved by opening the gas valve or topping up the water; faults that return after a reset need a technician. As an authorized Vaillant dealer in Antalya, Devka Doğalgaz diagnoses ecoTEC faults and repairs them with genuine parts as part of our boiler maintenance service.

Safety Warning

If you smell gas around the boiler, don't press the reset button. Following Vaillant's manuals, avoid naked flames, don't use electrical switches, sockets or the phone, close the gas meter valve, open doors and windows and leave the building. Once outside, call Enerya Antalya's 187 natural gas emergency line.

If your Vaillant boiler keeps faulting after a reset, call Devka Doğalgaz on +90 553 028 82 80. You can book an on-site visit anywhere in Antalya through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset a Vaillant boiler?

It depends on the model. In the current ecoTEC plus and ecoTEC pure manuals, the on/off button doubles as the reset button and is held for more than 3 seconds. The ecoTEC pro has a separate reset button that is pressed for one second. On the ecoTEC intro, you press the on/off button for more than 3 seconds and the display shows rE.

How many times can I reset a Vaillant boiler?

The ecoTEC plus, pure and pro manuals allow a maximum of three attempts for an ignition fault; the ecoTEC intro manual allows up to five. If the fault continues after that, stop resetting and contact an authorized technician.

Will resetting fix an F.22 fault?

No. F.22 means water pressure in the heating circuit is too low. The fix is to top up the system, not to reset it.

Does unplugging the boiler count as a reset?

Vaillant's user manuals describe the reset button as the way to clear faults; unplugging the boiler is not listed as a reset method. Using the button described in your manual is the right approach.

The boiler faults again after a reset. What should I do?

If the same fault code keeps returning, the problem isn't temporary. Without exceeding the attempt limit in the manual, contact an authorized Vaillant technician and note the code on the display; it speeds up diagnosis.
